"I do love new clothes..."

As we discuss Huxley's Brave New World, we focus on all of the negative aspects of the society: the control, promiscuity. lack of individuality and drug induced manipulation. However, for all of the obvious negative aspects, the new society has eliminated crime, poverty, disease, greed and many other deplorable human conditions. Are there any positive aspects of the new society? Is there anything to be learned from Huxley's vision? Is the price of this kind of  society too high for humans to pay?  Please comment.

  1. Letsssss goooooooooo!!!!!!! first! I don't believe that there are any positive aspects. The new society is filled with simple minds, drug use and sex, which is not bad either! I believe that Huxley tried to show us that sometimes a perfect society is not so perfect. You know what they say "We keep on waiting, waiting, waiting on the world to change!" take this maryam!

  2. I only see one positive aspect and that's controlling the population. With such control over the population, there won't be an over usage of the earth, so the earth will benefit. This is osmething we don't have today, we just constantly strain the earth for resources. This society in way is an ideal society, beside the reproduction part. -Sylvia Williams

  3. There is no positive aspect in a society that takes away the freedom for man to choose what they want to do. We may do things that are negative in our lives(drugs, excessive alcohol or pregnancy at age 16!),but at the end that is what we choose. Although in this society all this is elliminated it also takes with it the happiness of holding a baby in your hands, a family in which you pertain into or a way of overcoming your status life. There is definently something to learn about Huxley's vision and that is life may not be perfect, but if it was it really would not be. Life has so many beautiful things that sometimes have imperfections, but it is still amazing no matter what. Being in a perfect society would take away what is so important in our lives.

  4. There are no positive aspects in the new world. Yes they have figured out how to control many problems that we face in our society, like crime and disease, but the things that they have discarded of to accommodate for is not worth it. They have no sense of feeling or even self worth. Its like they are robots only programmed a certain way and that is all they ever live their life for. The price of this society is to high for humans to pay because in the new world, they have thrown freedom out the window. People want to live in a "perfect society" but in reality there really is not such a thing. We will always have our flaws but that is what makes us human, we make mistakes.

  5. I think the only positive aspects of the new world society are the ones you mentioned (elimination of greed and poverty etc.) Other than that however, the control of their society has eliminated any chance of individualism and actual freedom. I think Huxley is trying to make a point that even if there is nothing "bad" in the world, if we don't have our own mind to interpret our situations, it really means nothing. The price is too high to pay, I think, because at least when we are making our own decisions we can decide whether we want to live a certain way or not. -Lindsey tonnesen

  6. There are very few positive aspects in the Brave New world society. Greed, poverty and disease may be extinct, but there is no free will. Man has no choice or opinion in the new society. People cannot even pick their personality or job. It is as if they are programmed by their "conditioning". A person isn't even able to make choices for what they're going to do the next day. Nothing productive is occurring throughout their day. Sex is their main event! Family was frowned upon, which is one of our main aspects of happiness in today's society. Humans are way in over their heads and the price of this kind of society is way too high for us to pay.

  7. I do not believe that there are any positive aspects in the Brave New World Society. Although they have eliminated things like crime, poverty, disease, and greed, they took away people's individualism and right to choose. I believe that these two human traits are absolutely necessary to our well-being and that eliminating other deplorable human traits does not justify taking these away. What we can learn from Huxley's vision is that we need to cherish what we have and not strive for a perfect society because in doing so, we might turn ourselves into something humans were never intended to be (robots). The price of this society is far too high to pay because the right to choose, love and individualism is what makes us human and losing these in this society would just take away our reason to even live.

  8. I believe there are many positive effects of this new society suck as lack of poverty, crime, etc. One thing to be learned from huxley's vision is that some people in this new world still might not accept the way that everyone feel society should be run and can disprove of moral standards. I believe that although the benefits of this society are ever present it is to much to ask of a stable society to become like this. Brandon Day

  9. There are a lot of positive aspects in this new society. The conditioning and conformity prevents crime and poverty. While everyone's not equal in this society, everyone aside from a few rare cases are content with their caste and believe that they are better off than those in another caste. Of course, individualism and free will are suppressed, so this society can't be classified as a 'good' and it would be impossible to maintain even if it was created, but it's not all negative.

  10. Are there any positive aspects of the new society? The new society is exactly what humankind has been striving for. Even though is may seem inhumane to condition people in such ways and to control every aspect of our lives, eliminating our individuality has allowed them to cease wars, end world hunger, and prevent harmful emotions from conflicting with our lives. The thing to be learned from Huxley's vision is that perfection does not always come in the form that everyone wants it to be. There must be many things that will be sacrificed and many liberties that we have taken upon ourselves that will have to cease in order to obtain this goal. From our point of view, the new society comes at too great a cost to our lifestyle. Though if we look at the viewpoint of the citizens of the new society, they live a harmless, disease free, satisfying, and peaceful life without the nuisance of anger, love, or greed to get in the way of their lifestyle. So from that point, their lives are perfect, and definitely worth the cost, considering they have no worries or problems.

  11. The only positive aspects of the new society are the ones you mentioned (the elimination of poverty, disease, world hunger, and all that stuff). But the things that are allowed in the new society, like the sex and the drugs, are considered morally wrong today, and when you make that a negative aspect of society, that just makes individuals want to go out and do it. By introducing it to the new society as,.. every day life I guess, has made all that biggest problems of the world diminish to nothing. We must to stoop to conquer. We have to allow bad stuff to happen in order to achieve a greater advantage. That's something that Huxley has taught us through this book.
Plus, this counrty ows so much to everyone else, I dont think they should be making any drastic changes any time soon, unless they want to become the republic of everyone!

  12. The only positive aspects of the new society is the fact there is no diseases, no wars, poverty, starvation, and such, but also some of these things as necessary in life because if it wasn't for these negative effects we wouldn't have had people of all classes able to create new things and events occur that are recorded in history. In Huxley's book it would just be the "intelligent" people of higher classes that would be given opportunities and goals in their lives. Also, I really see no positive outlook because they are, to a point, living the same way we do today. By this I mean that people are not treated equally still in Huxley's vision and the only difference is that people did not fight for their freedom. I think Huxley's vision is just a reminder that we should stay far away from trying to make everything of perfection when they aren't meant to be that way. If we followed their vision it would mean sacrificing our individuality and just following the same routine day after day, never changing, and never moving forward. The price of this society by Huxley is too high of a price to pay because our world may be imperfect, but that's what makes it different and better.- Alicia Wilson

  13. The new society obviously has benefits. But these eliminate the good times that come with the hardships in life. As my man 50 Cent would say, "Joy wouldn't feel so good if it wasn't for pain". The wonderful thing about being human is having the freedom to do what you want and make your own decisions. Crime and poverty are obviously terrible things that the world could do without, but they happen because of the existence of free will. If you eliminate poverty and crime, you also eliminate the things that make this life worth living. The Yin and Yang make a perfect example of how there must be a balance in this world. Good and Evil must exist together. - Barack Jordan

  14. There is no benefits from new society. All society sucks. The world will always suck. What I learned from Huxley's visions is he was a freaking genius We don't really have THAT bad or OBVIOUS social classes but we will probably in the near future. The price is not too high for humans to pay.

  15. This society is what we all dreamed of but it isn't without pay. For people to not have an urge to do bad stuff for themselves...we need to take away individuality...the question is- who is willing to do that? I think there are benefits because people are safe but there is no diversity :(
