"We dance round in a ring and suppose, while the secret sits in the middle and knows..." -Robert Frost

All throughout Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, secrets abound. The catalytic moment of the novel, the death of Santiago Nasar, is caused by Angela Vicario allegedly revealing the secret identity of the man who took her virginity. However, this information was never, ever confirmed. Everyone in the novel possesses secrets; some minor and silly others extremely important that have far reaching effects on the people and actions of the novel. Can secrets still do damage if no one knows them? Do secrets always come out eventually? Talk about how secrets affect the people and the action in the novel, but also discuss whether secrets even exist in our modern world.

  1. The most dangerous secrets are those that contain information that is never exposed. How many people have went through thinggs and died because of lack of information that only secrets could have revealed it. I don not know if secrets always come out because some times secrets are forgotten and are never exposed. For example my best friend and I used to tell secrets as kids and never said them, but we don't carry those secrets still either. We forget them and there lostin our childhood. Secrets in this novel definently affect people in this story because a lot of people knew about Santiago's death, but no one said anything except an anonymous note. Even though in our modern world technology like the internet expose a lot about ourselves there are still secrets from ine person to another to a country to another.

  2. Secrets have the ability to do extreme damage if no one knows about them and if they are never revealed. They can alter relationships and cause someone to feel perfectly fine with one even though there may be underlying problems that can be incredibly scandalous. For example if someone cheats on their spouse and lies about it, this would make their spouse feel like everything is fine but the cheater would know and this could cause problems with their conscience. Another example is how J. Edgar Hoover kept secrets from the country. This caused problems with many individuals who he deemed as traitors or Communists sometimes because they simply stood against him. When these secrets were revealed to the nation, they caused extreme turbulence for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and resulted in a loss of credibility for the agency. Though secrets may not always come out eventually because they can be either forgotten or so well hidden that it is impossible for them to be discovered, they can have both open and serious problems or concealed and discreet problems. The main way that secrets affect people in the novel is that they get Santiago killed because Angela kept her secret about her loss of virginity and no one told Santiago about the twin's plans. Also secrets definitely exist in our real world. As mentioned earlier, governments and spouses in marriages often keep secrets; as well as children, parents, family members, teachers, students, and everyone else because everyone has something to hide that they do not want anyone to find out about.

  3. A secret always comes out no matter what. No one can ever keep a secret to themselves, including myself. Secrets don't really exist because nothing remains a secret. This reminds of the theme song for Pretty Little Liars " two can keep a secret if one of them is dead". An obvious person effected by a secret in CODF is Santiago. Everyone knows that he is supposed to be killed, and everyone keeps the secret away from him. Secrets DO NOT exist in the modern world. Nothing remains a secret, absolutely nothing. If something has remained a secret I wouldn't really know so maybe they do but from life experience secrets never remain secrets. EVER.

  4. Secrets can the be the death of someone. For example, Angela lied that Santiago was the one who stole her virginity, but the truth is he was not the one. Maybe Angela secretly was a virgin until Bayardo had sex with her. If so, Angela could have saved Santiago's life by letting the secret out. Secrets can also save lives. If Angela was not pure before the marriage, she could have secretly kept that to herself and just denied that she had sex before marriage. There are a lot of secrets now a days. Some of it is gossip. Others is severe and could break relationships.

  5. Secrets can hurt people but they do not always come out. For example, Angela's mother did stuff to Angela that the book says "she carried to the grave.". Now, we will never know what truly happened because the person kept the secret and died with it. Secrets turned the whole story of the book from something dealing with honor to something that happened because of hatred and jealousy. The secrets that came out give you a whole new perspective on the death of Santiago Nassar. Before, you thought that Angela's brothers were guilty but then you realize the whole town was guilty because everyone wanted him dead for various reasons.

  6. Secrets make people who they are today. No matter who you are, you have some type of secret. Just like in the novel everyone has a secret. SEcrets no matter how small, all can cause damage to someone. They control your mind in a way. Instead of being able to think about something you're busy thinking about that secret. Eventually most secrets come out, because it's hard to keep them.

  7. Secrets can definitely have negative effects even if no one knows about them. In fact, I think the effects are even worse if no one knows about the secret. However, the truth will always eventually come out. Natural forces have a way on ensuring everything ends for the better. There are probably millions of secrets that have existed in history and affected the entire world. Our government has lied to us before, so obviously there is a chance that they still do. In the book, the gossip leads to someone dying. While most secrets don't lead to such horrible things, it's still exploiting the concept of how secrets can affect many people. - Barack Jordan

  8. Secrets can do damage of nobody know them as well as if everybody knows them. There really are no secrets that nodoby knows. The difference between a well kept secret and a regular secret is the amount of time that it takes for the secret to come to light. Not whether or not the secret comes to lIght. In the novel the secret never got to Santiago and this was the first secret that I have ever heard of that doesn't get to the person that it's about. At first, I began to think that maybe everyone wanted Santiago dead an that was the reason why nobody told him about his upcoming death. In the novel it was made so clear that Santiago knew nothing of his upcoming date because he didn't even react to the hints dropped by some of the characters. Secrets lose or gain so much details as it circulates from person to person and it lust makes me wonder how the secret didn't get to Santiago by mistake. In our modern world secrets are on the verge of becoming extinct. It seems like only government can keep a secret.

  9. Secrets can still do damage if no one knows them because if their not told it can often hurt the ones you care about around you. Others then become confused with what is actually wrong with that person and can misunderstand the situation. Secrets sometimes can come out, while others might take their secrets with them to their death. In the novel "Chronicle of A Death Foretold" Angela suddenly answers her brothers that it was Santiago Nassar who had taken her virginity from her. However, Angela was a women who held a lot of secrets in the novel because she never tells who was the man who actually took her virginity and she never explains why she was returned to her home on the night of her wedding. Due to Angela's secrets it caused great distress for Santiago Nassar and for her own family because her mother was even ashamed to have her as a daughter. In today's society people often are found not to hold their secrets because they wish to be given attention by others, but there are still others who wish to keep their secrets and hold them during their lifetime.- Alicia Wilson

  10. Secrets that are not told can still do as much damage, sometimes worse, as if they were told. Even though people attempt to keep secrets to themselves they are typically found out anyways by friends or families. However, In Chronicle of A Death Foretold many of the townspeople are at fault because they kept a huge secret from Santiago Nassar. Also, Angela was another victim who withheld her secrets and the consequences were that people in their town suffered for them. In today's world there are still secrets within everyone because someone always has something to hide in their life.- Thomas Cummings

  11. Secrets can still hurt people if no one knows take for instance if a guy is cheating on a girl then the girl is getting hurt and she doesn't even know it. But secrets don't eventually always come out people get away with stuff all the time. So i think that secrets are hurtful even if the person doesnt know it.

  12. There really is no meaning to the term secret in our society. A secret is something that is kept from others but it is almost impossible for a person to keep a secret today. Everything comes out through the media or social networks. Keeping secrets also can do much harm to people that are involved, as seen in the novel. The entire town kept this secret from Santiago which lead to his murder. Angela kept this secret from her brothers for a while to try and save her own families honor, while ruining another persons life in the midst of everything. We will always have secrets because people will always have something to hide so they will not be judge by others.

  13. Brandon Day-I believe that secrets can still do damage even though no one knows that they exist because of the fact that most secrets are negative ones and in them being negative they are to cause someone or something harm in some way. Secrets do eventually come out over time either in a good or bad way. They are revealed with time and their true intent is revealed along with them. Secrets affect many peoples lives in the world and cause many deaths as in the novel in the life of Santiago Nassar. In our modern world I believe that secrets still do exist in some areas very vaguely because they are so hard to keep because of the lack of privacy due to an increase in technology.

  14. Depending on the situation, secrets can hurt whoever. Its true, that some secrets are never revealed, never spoke of again, and are ultimately forgotten. But, once that one person you told dwells on that secret, they are bound to tell someone else, and they that's how things spread. Within the book, everyone knows that Santiago Nasar is going to die, but refuse to say anything about it. In this case, these are one of those secrets that can hurt someone in the end, literally. Some secrets never come out, and it wouldn't have been so bad if know one but the brothers knew about their potential plot to kill Santiago. Considering that almost everyone in the town knew, well at least the people closet to him, the situation turned for the worst.

  15. Honestly I really think it depends on the secret. For example when people throw "surprise" parties, that is a secret but no one is hurt in the process. I think it all has to do with intent, if someone's intent is to keep a secret at the expense of someone else, like in the novel, then it is dangerous. Also, sometimes secrets never do come out; some people go to their graves with secrets. However, in modern society, it is extremely hard to keep a secret for whatever reason: people are nosy, people want attention, people feel suspicious or threatened etc.
